On behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin has expressed its deep condolences to the family and friends of ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who died in hospital on Tuesday.
The Kremlin says a personal telegram will be sent by the President on Wednesday.
Gorbachev presided over major economic and political reforms that brought the Soviet Union to an end in 1991, and is also credited with bringing about the end to the Cold War.
