He spoke outside Number Ten Downing Street after another dizzying morning of further resignations from his government….but also activity to fill some of the vacant positions.

He insists he will remain in office leading a caretaker government…possibly until the autumn, if that's how long it takes the party to choose a successor….but made it clear that after 24 very uncertain hours, he does now foresee a change at the top.

IN:  "Of course…."

He offered no contrition for the ordeal he has put the country through…nor any words of apology to members of his own party who have resigned from his government en masse this week…prompting his ouster.

Before the Prime Minister made that speech, the leader of the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, insisted he would call for a no-confidence vote in Parliament IF Boris Johnson attempted to stay in office leading a caretaker administration.

And he flayed the governing Conservative Party for standing by the Prime Minister for so long.

IN:  "He's inflicted…."

OUT:  "…enough is enough"

It remains unclear whether the Prime Minister has sufficient support of Conservative members of Parliament to create a caretaker administration and lead it.
