NI RISE KICKS IN FOR UK WORKERS

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is defending a National Insurance rise that kicks in on Wednesday, saying it's "necessary and fair".

Millions of workers will see their contributions increase by 1.25 pence in the pound.

The money will be spent on reducing the NHS backlog and reforming adult social care.

But the government's being criticised by opposition parties for a tax rise as the cost of living spikes.

Dr Lara Shemtob from Imperial College London thinks the funding will now have to go on pay rises for health sector workers.
