Accusations of sleaze as UK MPs vote to put on hold suspension of colleague

British politicians have voted to put on hold the suspension of former government minister Owen Paterson.

The Conservative Party MP faced a 30 day suspension after a parliamentary committee found he had breached lobbying rules by using his position to assist two companies employing him as a paid consultant.

But the governing Conservatives claimed the system was unfair and proposed changing the investigation process. Their amendment was supported by 250 votes to 232.
