The UK government's under growing pressure to adapt its self-isolation policy for schools because of hundreds of thousands of lost learning days.
At present, hundreds of pupils in a year-group bubble can be forced to self-isolate if just one child tests positive for covid-19.
In England, figures show 172 000 children were self-isolating earlier this month - and therefore not attending school in person.
