Concerns mount over spike in Covid-19 cases in two Indian states

INTRO:

Concerns are growing about the sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in two states in India, which account for the majority of the country's confirmed active infections.

Out of some 13,700 Covid-19 infections recorded in the past 24 hours, three quarters of these were in the states of Maharashtra and Kerala.

Doctors are linking the spike to new variants, but the government has said that there is insufficient scientific evidence to support the theory.
