The US State Department has declared Chinese policies on Uighurs (WE-gurs) and other mostly Muslim ethnic minorities in the northwestern region of Xingiang (SHIN-jaang) constitute "genocide" and "crimes against humanity."
The majority of the inhabitants of Xingiang are ethnically and culturally distinct from the Han Chinese majority.
As US Correspondent Rachel Silverman reports, this State Department declaration comes on the last full day of the Trump administration.
