Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, Alexander Novak, is calling US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline "protectionism".
As the new year began, the new rules came into force, giving companies until the end of January to stop working on the project.
The pipeline is intended to pump natural gas from Russia to the European gas grid, but the US fears it'll compromise Europe's energy security as the continent becomes even more reliant on Russian gas.
