US jobless claims remain under 1 million but thousands more layoffs to come

The number of people claiming unemployment insurance for the first time in the US, has remained under a million for the fifth consecutive week.


But at 873,000, the total is still well above anything the U.S. had seen since before the pandemic.


More recently announced layoffs suggest the labor market is going to become weaker after several months of gains.
