UK AND EU HOLD EMERGENCY TALKS

The UK and EU are holding emergency talks in London on Thursday over legislation which could override parts of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

The UK says it's necessary as a contingency if no trade deal is reached with the EU.

But Brussels says trust has been damaged, as talks on that trade deal also continue in London.

A Brexit transition period concludes at the end of this year, by which time both sides had said they wanted a trade agreement in place.

Jessica Sargeant of The Institute for Government says the UK is employing a deliberate tactic.
