On Saturday, the Indian state of Assam will publish a list of 'genuine' citizens and identity illegal immigrants.
Ahead of that the Indian government has stepped up security and is holding an information drive to tell people that they will not become stateless if they fail to qualify.
In the last four years, Assam's 32 million residents here have been asked to prove that they or their ancestors lived in India prior to 1971- that's when the Bangladesh liberation war began and Assam saw a massive influx of people across the state's porous border.
Neha Poonia has more from Guwahati in Assam.
