Trade officials will meet in Beijing for a 14th round of talks on a trilateral deal.
Officials in Seoul say they hope to open up goods and services markets and lower trade barriers with China and Japan.
Exporters here would get hit hard by a full-out trade war between China and the U.S.
But despite years of talks, politics and differences on how much to open markets have kept Seoul and its neighbors from striking a deal.
South Korea is increasingly looking to Southeast Asia as an export destination.
