Voters punish ruling parties in German state election

Germany's ruling parties posted their worst results in decades in
regional elections in the state of Hesse.

Despite the poor showing, Angela Merkel's conservatives will likely
stay in control of the state, giving Merkel some breathing room
against critics within her own party.
