Indian government asks Whatsapp to tackle fake news

The Indian government has pulled up the Facebook-owned instant messaging service, asking it to take urgent steps to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Over the last three months, twenty-nine people have been lynched by mobs across eight Indian states. These people were killed after locals mistook them to be child abductors- following viral messages circulated on WhatsApp warning of child kidnapping gangs being active in those areas.
