Speaker Ryan optimistic shutdown will be avoided

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan is optimistic he has the votes to get the Senate's compromise on spending through to keep the U.S. government open. (The current spending plan expires at midnight Thursday / 0500 GMT Friday)

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke for 8 hours in support of the need for a deal on DACA - deferred action for childhood arrivals - and other issues tied to immigration reform, which the Democrats had promised would be solved with a spending deal.

While some Republicans are horrified by how much debt the spending plan will rack up over two years, Representative Pelosi says she won't actively stand in the way.

Speaker Ryan:

IN: "We want...
OUT: ...can produce."
