India announces a pro-farmer, pro-poor budget

With general elections in India less than a year away, the Indian government has announced various sops for the poor and for the debt-ridden farming community in its annual budget. 

It has also said that India is firmly on a path to achieve a growth of 8% after seeing growth fall to 6.7% last year on account of demonetisation and the new goods and services tax regime.
