Bank of England Governor Mark Carney says UK interest rates could rise sooner and faster than previously thought if the economy remains on track.
It comes as the Bank announced policymakers voted to hold interest rates at 0.5 per cent at their latest meeting. The comments prompted the pound to jump against major currencies including the dollar.
Economists believe the next interest rate rise could come in the spring.
Governor Mark Carney said any interest rate rises are likely to return inflation rates to target.
