The US government could effectively shut down on Saturday because of a failure by Republicans and Democrats to agree on spending.
Members of the US House have voted through a bill, but Democrats in the US Senate are holding back their crucial support.
They want Republicans to also support an Obama-era program to protect the children of illegal immigrants from deportation.
If a deal isn't reached at least 800,000 government workers would stay at home until a deal is reached, though critical services would continue.
