UN calls for action over Myanmar's Rohingya refugees

The United Nations Security Council has held its first public meeting on Myanmar in over eight years, to discuss the violence and worsening Rohingya refugee crisis.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the Myanmar government to end military action, allow aid into the country, and let the refugees return home.

He also demanded the Rohingya Muslim minority be officially recognized by the government and be granted citizenship.

The UN estimates during the last 5 weeks of violence more than 500,000 people have fled to neighboring Bangladesh.

Antonio Guterres said action was now needed.
