Washington will not remove controversial interceptor missiles from South Korea

The United States says it has no intention of withdrawing its controversial THAAD missile interceptor system from South Korea, as tensions rise over North Korea's expanding nuclear and missile programmes.

Russia and China are opposed to the system, but State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has told reporters that it's essential to protect the region and US troops in the area.

The US continues to pressure China to do more to persuade Pyongyang to stop its weapons programmes, and Ms Nauert says Washington is still hopeful that Beijing can be a strong partner.

She said nations around the world had to do more as well, calling upon countries from Asia to the Middle East and Europe to cut economic ties with Pyongyang, and to send home North Korean guest workers.
