Indian government says cow vigilante groups illegal

The Indian government has told the country's Supreme Court that no vigilante group has any place in the country as per the procedure of law.

The government has also said that it does not support any act of vigilantism in the name of protecting cows- an animal Hindus consider holy. Critics have accused the Indian government of tacitly encouraging such violence by failing to punish the perpetrators.

In the last 22 months, there have been over 20 instances of minorities being targeted by Hindu groups over allegations of cow slaughter or beef consumption.
