US reportedly to extend protected status for Haitians

The US government is expected to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants by six months.

Trump officials had been reviewing the program put in place by the Obama administration following the 2010 earthquake in the country.

Several lawmakers and immigrant advocacy groups had called for an 18-month extension of the status which protects roughly 50,000 Haitians from deportation.

Isaie Marc, who represents a labor union with hundreds of Haitian members, says conditions remain difficult seven years after the disaster.
