Schumer calls for Sessions to resign

Leading Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer has called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, after it came to light he had lied under oath about having contacts with Russia during Donald Trump's campaign for president.

Mr Schumer said a special prosecutor needs to be appointed to oversee the investigation into links between the Trump team and Moscow.

And in the meantime, he said the US inspector general, who was appointed under President Obama, should probe Jeff Sessions' own actions with regard to the investigation so far.

Former Senator Sessions spoke with the Russian ambassador at least twice over the course of the past year, including in a private conversation in September.

Senator Chuck Schumer said the truth must be uncovered.
