Top Republican lawmakers are scrambling to deflect accusations that the U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions perjured himself by failing to reveal the extent of his contact with the Russian Ambassador to Washington, during the presidential election campaign.
House Leader Paul Ryan admitted that Russia tried to interfere in the U.S. election, but insisted there was no evidence that an American had colluded.
Ignoring calls for Jeff Sessions to step aside, Paul Ryan insisted lawmakers meet with ambassadors ' all the time', and the Attorney General should recuse himself only if he becomes the subject of an investigation.
