The White House is refusing to criticize and to defend FBI director James Comey's decision to inform lawmakers and the U.S. public that an additional trove of Hillary Clinton emails had been found on a laptop owned by her aide's estranged husband.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest says President Obama remains convinced of James Comey's independence.
