The United Nations has confirmed that Antonio Guterres will be the
next Secretary General - after a Wednesday approval process by the 193
member states at the General Assembly.
The formal vote comes on a recommendation from the UN's Security
Council, which made a recommendation last week that the former UN
refugee commissioner, and prime minister of Portugal, could best serve
the organization.
Antonio Guterres said he felt humbled by the position and applauded
the new transparency of the UN Secretary General selection process.
