Hillary Clinton scorns Donald Trump as she accepts Democratic nomination

Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has made the biggest speech of her life, trying to unify the divided party at its convention in Philadelphia.

As she formally accepted the nomination, Mrs Clinton tried woo disappointed supporters of former rival Bernie Sanders, pledging to champion his progressive policies.

Several opinion polls show Mrs Clinton behind controversial Republican candidate Donald Trump.  Mrs Clinton was scathing in her criticism of Mr Trump, saying his negative campaign would not triumph:

Mrs Clinton said Mr Trump did not have the temperament to be trusted with the nation's nuclear weapons, and scorned his belief that only he had the answers to America's problems.

Mrs Clinton's speech ranged across international and domestic issues. She vowed to counter international terrorist groups such as the self-declared Islamic State, and to deal with social problems at home. To beat Mr Trump she needs to appeal to a broad range of Americans, and made a pitch to the country that she would be a President for all.
