FBI: Mateen claimed ties to numerous terror groups

FBI Director James Comey says alleged Florida gunman Omar Mateen was radicalized online, and proclaimed ties to a number of extremist organizations.

Mr Comey says Mateen's motivations for the attack are "confusing", with the shooter claiming inspiration from varied militant groups including the Islamic State, Hezbollah, Al Nusra Front, and Al Qaeda.

The FBI Director also revealed that Mateen had been known to authorities since 2013. During the course of two investigations into whether Mateen was indeed a terrorist, the FBI introduced him to confidential sources, recorded his conversations, followed him, searched his financial records, and interviewed those who knew him... but did not find reason to take action against him.

Mr Comey said the investigation into the Orlando attack will continue- as well as an internal review into whether the FBI should have proceeded differently in his case.
