Amnesty International says human rights under attack around the world

Governments around the world are breaking international human rights laws and undermining the systems to protect them.  That's the conclusion of human rights group Amnesty International which has launched it's annual "State of the World's Human Rights" report.   It says countries in every region are causing suffering to their citizens, with assaults on human rights often dressed up as security measures.

Many countries are given special mention including China, Iran, Angola, Russia and Saudi Arabia.  Some of which have a role in the Syrian conflict which features, with the group saying war crimes have been committed by all sides.    The report says the United Nations and other institutions have been systematically weakened, with the UN in desperate need of reinvigoration if it is to get back to its original role of protecting people's rights.

Amnesty International's Secretary General is Salil Shetty.
