World leaders speak at Summit on Countering ISIL & Violent Extremism

day after Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the US of failing to curb ISIL's spread, President Barack Obama has called on the international community to launch a long-term counterterrorism campaign.

On Monday, Putin said Obama's administration has been ineffective at restricting certain financial backchannels that have funded the extremist organization.

While hosting the Leaders' Summit on Countering ISIL & Violent Extremism at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday, President Obama stressed that with diplomatic efforts ISIL can be defeated.

Leaders discussed the importance of targeting the root causes of
terrorism, with many saying that disenfranchised youth are easy
targets for extremist ideology.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said leaders need to address young
people's needs and tackle the socio-economic challenges that leave
communities vulnerable to radicalization.
