Chimpanzees Aren't 'Legal Persons,' New York Judge Rules

A New York Judge has ruled that two local chimpanzees are not legal
persons, and that their captivity at a state research university is
not considered "illegal imprisonment." In a ruling filed Thursday in
Manhattan, Justice Barbara Jaffee turned down a request from an
activist group who requested a writ of habeas corpus, often used to
free people from unlawful detention, for the chimps.
