Russia pledges fresh support for Syria's Assad

Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem says that Russia has promised economic, political and military aid to President Bashar al-Assad's government there.

The announcement came on a visit by Mr al-Muallen to Moscow, which has hosted several Syrian meetings in the past year, but without the presence of the main, exiled, Syrian opposition.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says that the international community should not impose anything on Syria in the search for an end to the country's four and a half year old civil war.
