Obama pushes renewed cyber security effort at first ever summit

U.S. President Barack Obama is hosting the country's first-ever cyber security summit at Stanford University in California.

The event is part of a renewed effort to protect consumers and thwart hack attacks such as the one on Sony Pictures, which cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars every year.

Some Silicon Valley companies have been reluctant to give full support to cybersecurity bills before government surveillance practices have been reformed.

The CEOs of Facebook, Yahoo and Google did not attend.

President Obama said cybersecurity poses one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century and is a matter of economic and national security.
