EU lifts visa ban on Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe

The European Union has announced a waver on a visa ban for Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe following his appointment as chairman of the African Union last week.

President Mugabe is currently on an EU blacklist and was refused a rare invitation to an EU Africa summit in Brussels last year after his wife could not obtain a visa.

The former guerrilla leader is also banned from travelling to the United States due to his past of political violence and intimidation.

Last week The African Union appointed the Zimbabwean leader to serve as head of the 54 nation African Union.

But spokeswoman for the EU's external actions service Catherine Ray says the travel ban will still apply expect for his missions abroad as head of the AU.
