Edward Snowden has been awarded the Right Livelihood Honorary Award, often referred to as the 'Alternative Nobel Prize'.
The whistleblower, who is wanted by the United States for leaking secret documents on state surveillance programs, was awarded for his courage in revealing the "unprecedented" violation of "basic democratic processes and constitutional rights".
Mr Snowden accepted the award via video-link from Russia, where he now lives after receiving a three year residence permit in August.
