President Obama has praised US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who announced his resignation today. Mr Hagel, a Vietnam war veteran and former Republican senator, said it had been his life's "greatest privilege". He is expected to stay on as secretary until his successor is confirmed. President Obama confirmed his resignation paying tribute to his "class and integrity".
