California city passes landmark "soda tax"

Berkeley, a city in Northern California, has become the first in the United States to approve a tax on sugary drinks.

About 75 per cent of voters backed the one-cent-an-ounce tax on sodas, which campaigners hope will inspire similar measures in other states and cities.

But in nearby San Francisco -- from where Rebecca Bowring reports -- a proposed soda tax didn't receive enough support to pass.
