Weak economic data sparks further markets slide in US

Weak economic data out of the United States sent the markets tumbling
on Wednesday as fears for the global economy continue to cause gitters
on Wall Street.

At session lows the S&P 500 turned negative for the year as investors
ran for safer havens like government bonds.
