US, Turkey make initial deal to help fight ISIL

The U.S. and Turkey have reached an initial agreement to increase cooperation in the fight against the Islamic State militants.

Ankara and Washington have taken very different positions on the threat that is literally on Turkey's doorstep.

Our Washington Correspondent Priscilla Huff has an update:

The U.S. and Turkey have struggled to find common ground in the fight against the Islamic State jihadis because Turkey's strategy is focussed on Syria's Assad and their desire for a buffer zone.

U.S. State Department deputy spokesperson Marie Harf says that idea is not being discussed.

According to some reports, the Iraqi province of Anbar - which includes Baghdad - is on the verge of falling to the Islamic State fighters, but the U.S. is downplaying those reports.
