Obama announces major ramp up of US response to Ebola

US President Barack Obama has announced a major expansion of America's response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

He said the deadly virus poses a threat to global security, saying rapid action is needed.

The President announced that, at the request of the Liberian government, the US will establish a military command center in Liberia to support response efforts.

Mr. Obama also said the US will create an airbridge to get medical aid into West Africa faster.

Additional efforts will include building a new training site to prepare thousands of health workers,  and building new treatment facilities, including 1,000 beds for those infected.

The cost of implementing these plans is estimated at some $750 million dollars.

President Obama urged Congress to approve the funding without delay.
