Career spy Blaise Metreweli to become first woman to head MI6

INTRO: Blaise Metreweli has been appointed the new chief of MI6, the UK Secret Intelligence Service, becoming the first woman to lead the agency that recruits spies overseas since its foundation more than a century ago.

She will become the 18th chief of the organisation, taking up the post in October when Sir Richard Moore steps down after a five-year term. Laura Westbrook reports from London.

Pakistan has closed its border with Iran amid the escalating Iran-Israel crisis

Minnesota lawmaker shooting suspect captured

A man suspected of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband, and targeting another politician, has been caught.

Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were shot dead in their home on Saturday.

Their deaths were described by governor Tim Walz as a politically motivated assassination, who has confirmed the suspect was captured alive.

Massive manhunt underway in Minnesota after lawmakers gunned down in “politically motivated” attack

Law enforcement in Minnesota is sweeping through entire neighborhoods - searching for a man they say gunned down two democratic lawmakers in a politically motivated attack. Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were killed in their home early Saturday morning. Iran hits back following Israeli strikes on nuclear targets

Israel says it is dealing with retaliatory strikes from Iran after Tel Aviv hit nuclear and military facilities, killing several senior Iranians including the head of the country's Revolutionary Guard.


US President Donald Trump says Washington was aware of Israel's actions ahead of time and has been pressing Iran to make a deal to limit its nuclear activities.

Tributes are paid to those killed in India plane crash

Trump reacts to Israel's assault on Iran

Iran says several of its top military commanders and a senior official to the country's Supreme Leader have been killed in a wave of Israeli air strikes that targeted the country's nuclear facilities.


Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the military campaign will continue until he concludes the Iran no longer poses a threat to the region.


The Iranians responded with more than 100 drones targeting Israel, and accused the United States of supporting the Israeli military action.


But President Trump says the US military played no role in Israel's military assault.

14-year-old boy charged with murder in France after teaching assistant killed

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder in France after a teaching assistant was killed at a school in eastern France on Tuesday.

Only one passenger survived.
