US re-designates Houthi rebels as a terror organisation

The United States has officially designated the Houthi rebels in Yemen as a terror organisation.

The move comes after a spate of attacks in past weeks by the Iran-backed militants on ships in the Red Sea, assaults the group claims are in solidarity with Palestinians amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

The US and its allies have responded in recent days with strikes on Houthi targets in an effort to protect freedom of navigation.
