UN urges Israel to rescind northern Gaza evacuation order

The United Nations is urging Israel to rescind its order giving more than 1 million Palestinians just 24 hours to leave the north of the Gaza Strip and immediately evacuate to the territory's south.

Israeli forces are gathering for a possible ground invasion of Gaza following last week's Hamas attacks that left more than 1,300 Israelis dead.

Humanitarian organizations are warning of a massive loss of civilian life if the ground offensive goes ahead.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has been meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli defense chiefs, as our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken visits Israel

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has reasserted the United States's support for Israel during his visit to the country.

In a press conference on Thursday, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he said his nation "has Israel's back," following Saturday's Hamas-led terror attack which left more than 1,200 dead, including 25 American citizens.

Mr Netanyahu insists the militant group should be treated "exactly" like ISIS, vowing to annihilate them by launching hundreds of air strikes in Hamas-controlled Gaza, as his military plans for an ground offensive into the Palestinian territory currently under siege.

But Mr Blinken hinted at restraint in Israel's response, warning it's "important" to take "every possible precaution" to avoid harming innocent people.
