Republican lawmakers narrowly nominate Steve Scalise for Speaker

Republican lawmakers in the US have nominated Steve Scalise as their choice to become Speaker of the House after the sudden ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.


But his narrow victory of 113 to 99 over hard right congressman Jim Jordan, highlights the divisions that remain within the party - and the struggle he'll face when the vote goes to the House floor where he'll need 217 Republicans to support him.

NASA says asteroid samples rich carbon and water, the building blocks of life

NASA has revealed the very first glimpse of samples taken from the asteroid Bennu…samples they believe could provide new information into the formation of not just our solar system or planet  - but the origins of life on Earth. More presumed human remains found from Titan

More presumed human remains have been recovered from the Titan submersible which imploded on a descent to the Titanic shipwreck, killing all five passengers.


US Coast Guard officials also said that additional debris was recovered from the sea floor and will be assessed at a US port.

11 UN staff killed in Gaza

At least 11 UN staff members have been killed in Gaza as fighting
there continues to intensify.
The United Nations says there has also been mass displacement with
many seeking shelter in its facilities.
It says it will continue to remain operating in Gaza as it is the only
lifeline for most of the Palestine refugees, providing essential
services such as education and healthcare.

UN calls for humanitarian corridor in Gaza as US tries to negotiate "safe passage" for civlians

The United Nations is calling for the creation of a humanitarian corridor that will provide protection for civilians in the Gaza Strip.


The US government has confirmed it's in talks with Egypt and Israel about creating safe passage for civilians to leave Gaza amid mounting concerns that Israel may soon launch a ground invasion of the territory following last weekend's Hamas attacks that left more than 1,200 Israelis dead.

Niger orders UN diplomats to leave country

Niger's junta has ordered the chief of the United Nations mission to
leave the country within three days.

George Santos slapped with more charges

Prosecutors have added ten additional federal charges to George
Santos' indictment.
As part of the new charges, the embattled representative Santos is
accused of criminal schemes that include stealing credit card details
of donors to his campaign.
Santos, a congressman representing New York has been dogged by
allegations of fraud since his election, these include lying on his
resume and embellishing his past work experience as part of his 2022
political campaign.

Israel begins "total blockade" of Gaza as Blinken heads to Jersualem

The only power plant in the Gaza Strip is no longer operational, as Israel's continues to bombard the territory.


The death toll in Israel from last weekend's Hamas attacks has now risen above 1,200. 


And it's reported that at least 1,000 people have died in Gaza since Israel's reprisals began.


Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is preparing to fly to Israel for crisis talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel readies troops for Gaza offensive as fuel runs out in Gaza

All Flights Cancelled From London Luton Airport, After Car Park Fire

US Condemns Artillery Strike on Myanmar Refugee Camp

US aircraft carrier to dock in S Korea

An American air craft carrier is due to dock in South Korea this week in a move that is likely to raise the ire of Pyongyang.
