India's main opposition party to protest Rahul Gandhi's conviction

India's oldest political party- the Indian National Congress - plans to take to the streets and file a legal challenge to its leader Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a criminal defamation case.

He's been sentenced to two years in prison - but will not go to jail since he's been granted bail.

Mr Gandhi was convicted by a court in Prime Minister Modi's home state of Gujarat. The allegation is that back in 2019 he referred to Mr Modi as a thief.

Criminal defamation is a British-era law that critics allege is often misused by political parties to target their rivals.
