Stocks fall as interest rates rise

U.S. stocks sank in afternoon trading Wednesday on news that interest
rates are on the rise again.

Recent volatility in the banking sector had fueled speculation that
the Federal Reserve might ease off on rate hikes.

US Fed raises rates by another 0.25%

The US Federal Reserve has raised interest rates by a quarter of a
percent despite the recent turmoil in the banking sector.

It now takes rates to a target range of 4.75-5% - the highest level since 2007.

Some economists had urged America's central bank to pause on rate
hikes to help add confidence following the collapse of Silicon Valley
Bank and Signature Bank.

The French president put on a show of defiance in what was his first media appearance since the government's controversial pension reform was forced through parliament last week.

Emmanuel Macron said he would not be rowing back on the changes - of which the headline policy is raising France's retirement age from 62 to 64.

Euro hits 5-week high against U.S. dollar


The Euro hit a five-week high against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday.

Surveillance footage shows Black man held down at US psychiatric hospital

Surveillance footage has been released of police officers and hospital workers piling on a Black man at a US state psychiatric hospital


Irvo Otieno was taken into emergency custody earlier this month after experiencing mental health distress.


Footage shows the 28-year-old being held on the ground for 11 minutes before his body stopped moving.

Security tightened in case Trump is arrested in New York
