US House Speaker election becomes longest since 1859

 The saga to vote in the next Speaker of the US House of Representatives continues - breaking records last set almost 165 years ago.


Republican Kevin McCarthy has now lost 11 rounds of voting over three days - despite making major concessions to the group of hardliners in his party voting against him.

US House vote: McCarthy loses 8th vote

Kevin McCarthy, the Republican's leader in Congress has failed yet
again to be elected speaker of the House of Representatives.

Despite making fresh concessions to hard-line right-wingers, the
Republican party is deadlocked with far-right members of Congress
continuing to block Mr. McCarthy's victory.

At one point today Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida even
voted for former President Donald Trump to become speaker of the
House.

Biden expands legal migration, announces trip to the southern border

U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Thursday that he is expanding a program that accepts migrants from certain countries - but is also ramping up expelling those who attempt to cross the border illegally.

The announcement comes alongside plans for the president to visit the border city of El Paso, Texas on Sunday - as his administration grapples with a surge of migrants and overwhelmed immigration system.

BIDEN DEFENDS STUDENT RELIEF

US introduces Covid-19 tests for China arrivals

From today all airline passengers arriving in the US from China must
test negative for Covid-19.

Prince Harry accuses Prince William of attacking him in leaked book extract

Prince Harry has reportedly accused his brother Prince William of physically attacking him in a leaked extract from his new book.


According to the Guardian newspaper, the incident took place after an argument about Harry's marriage to American actress Meghan Markle.


The Duke of Sussex's autobiography Spare is due to be released next week, alongside several TV interviews to promote the new book.

France sends tanks to Ukraine to support war effort

McCarthy loses 6th US Speaker vote

After six rounds of voting the US House of Representatives has still
not agreed on a new House Speaker.

Republican Kevin McCarthy has been repeatedly blocked from winning the
majority of the votes by a group of hardliners in his own party.

It's the first time in a hundred that the House has been unable to
elect a Speaker.
