Police ramp up pressure in downtown Ottawa

Canadian police are ramping up pressure on protestors to end their
blockade of a section of downtown Ottawa.

For several weeks demonstrators have blocked streets outside the
nation's parliament demanding an end to Covid-19 restrictions.

Covid cases fall in US as Omicron wanes

NATO Remains Committed To Peaceful Solution In Ukraine

NATO allies remain committed to finding a 'peaceful solution' to the crisis between Russia and  Ukraine.

That was the message from NATO's Secretary General speaking at the end of the defence ministers summit in Brussels.

Jens Stoltenberg also addressed the supposed withdrawal of some Russian troops in border regions, saying NATO had seen no signs of de-escalation.

He also warned against a return to a Cold War era security situation in Europe:

SHELLING IN UKRAINE RISKS ESCALATION

Rebels in a self-declared autonomous region of Ukraine have accused Kyiv of shelling villages.

The self-declared Luhansk People's Republic says the Ukrainian army fired at their territory four times – violating the Minsk agreement.

Kiev says the separatists shot at Ukrainian forces, and that they did not return fire.

UK Foreign Secretary: we shouldn't be "lulled into a false sense of security" by Russian claims


The UK Foreign Secretary says western allies shouldn't be "lulled into a false sense of security" by Moscow's claims that it's pulling some troops back from the border with Ukraine.

Liz Truss made the comments in an opinion piece in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, ahead of a trip to Ukraine and Poland.

Sydney beaches closed after first fatal shark attack in 60 years

Japan to relax Covid border entry restrictions

Japan is to relax its Covid border entry restrictions, according to local media. 

The move comes amid mounting pressure from the business community. The country currently bans new entries of foreign nationals, leaving many students and workers unable to travel.

Ukrainian President & NATO Chief say no sign of Russian de-escalation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg have both said today that they see no sign of Russia's promised military de-escalation.

US warns of "swift and firm" response if Russia recognises Donetsk and Luhansk as independent

The US has said that Russia would face a swift and firm response if it recognises the Russian-controlled separatist Ukranian states of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent.

UK inflation hits 30-year-high for second month running


Inflation in the UK increased again in January, another blow for consumers struggling with rising prices for everything from food to energy bills.
