Academic Proposes Million Yuan Rewards to Boost China's Birth Rate


A renowned Chinese academic has sparked debate over the high costs of raising children in China following the release of the country's population census.

Professor Liang Jianzhang of Peking University's School of Economics has called on the government to offer parents a 1 million yuan reward to help shore up its declining birth rate.

Violence spirals in Middle East with more than 26 Palestinians confirmed dead

At least 26 Palestinians have been killed after Israel launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip in response to the firing of more than 300 rockets at Israel by Hamas there.

Police search for possible serial killer victim

New evidence has come to light about a possible victim of Fred West - one of the UKs most notorious serial killers.

China's Population Grows to 1.41 billion, Birth Rate Slows

China's population growth rate fell to 5.3% from 5.7% a decade ago but still rose by about 72 million to 1.41 billion people, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

That means China is still the world's most populous nation but officials said its ageing demographic will continue to put pressure on the development of the country.
