Over 80 people killed in Western Ethiopia

Over 80 people have reportedly been killed near Ethiopia's border with Sudan.

According to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission  the dead are civilians from the country's western region which has been the site of recurring violence in recent months.

Germany's tough lockdown here to stay: Health Minister

Germany's Health Minister has warned the country's tough coronavirus restrictions won't be lifted anytime soon as authorities battle to contain a winter resurgence of the disease. 

While Germany won global praise for its handling of the crisis at the beginning of the pandemic, it now finds itself ensnared in a second wave that has left the hospital system struggling to keep up.

Mike Pompeo trip to Brussels cancelled at eleventh hour

A planned visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Brussels has been cancelled the day before it was due to take place. 

A US statement said the move was to allow Mr Pompeo to focus on the presidential transition - but EU leaders are said to have been unwilling to meet with a member of the Trump administration in light of last week's Capitol riots.

New Trial For Possible COVID Treatment

A major new trial has begun in the UK of a treatment that aims to stop COVID patients developing severe illness.


Early results suggest it could cut the chances of infected patients going on to be seriously ill by almost 80 percent.

U.S. Observer Mission Withdraws from Uganda Elections

The U.S. Mission in Uganda has withdrawn its diplomatic observers of Uganda's January 14 elections

A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Uganda says more than 75 percent of the U.S. election observer team have been denied accreditation by the country's Electoral Commission.  

The U.S. Ambassador says it is not possible for the United States to meaningfully observe the conduct of Uganda's elections at polling sites across the country with only 15 accreditations approved.

Australia – Vaccine efficacy questioned
